I was hooked on entering the Fashions on the Field competition at Caulfield from the first time I entered many years ago. It was a lot more than going  home with a wonderful goodie bag as being a finalist that drew me back. Hell, I was also rewarded with an African safari for some of my efforts! As someone recently said – ‘it’s like a drug’.

Fashion at Caulfield Cup Carnival

Returning to the scene after a 5 year hiatus, I was instantly hooked once again. This time around, I’m on a mission to capture what it is that makes entering Fashions on the Field so addictive.

This is something that a woman plans for months, if not a year beforehand. I would say that it takes more effort, and probably the same amount of money, as a bride choosing her wedding dress! So, it would only be fair that she is acknowledged for her efforts. We at Freshphotography, hope to capture as many of these gorgeous ladies as we can so that they know their efforts were appreciated.

To warm us up, we attended the Caulfield Preview Day in Melbourne in September. We were not disappointed with the turn-up of fashion contestants and race-goers. The day was a stunning 23 degrees and the sun allowed us to produce some fabulous photographs.

The three finalists chosen gave us a sense that the 50’s and 60’s era was the flavour for this year and that the peplum survives another season.

At the Caulfield Guineas, the competition got harder with over 100 entrants looking gorgeous on another sunny day. All eyes were on model, Silvana Lovin, who looked ethereal in an airy JAton Couture dress. It was refreshing to see every colour but black making floating down the catwalk.

With so many women chasing that elusive sash, Melbourne milliners are on the top of their field. We have noticed some super stunning hats that would give the ladies at ascot a run for their money. Millinery which graced the heads of some fashion finalists came from Rebecca Share, Jill and Jack, and Danica Erard.  Paris Kyne was a favourite of celebrities.

Caulfield Cup Day was just a feast for the fashionista’s eye. Structured dresses, florals, and of course the peplum. There was a trend of huge singular flowers and little cocktail hats adorning heads. Classic tailoring remained a favourite.

The competition was extremely tough with so many beautiful ladies in stunning outfits not making it through to the last round. You just never know what the judges are looking for. So, whatever you wear,  just be sure you love wearing it!

The winner of the Chadstone Fashion Stakes at Caulfield Cup 2012 was 22 year old Melissa Buchanan of Echuca. Melissa looked divine in a custom made black lace, sleeved dress with a fuchsia underskirt. She wore a classic but modern cocktail hat, decorated with French roses by Danica Erard, also of Echuca. She exuded confidence as she strutted the catwalk like a professional model. Congratulations to a deserved winner. Melissa has also won the Mornington Cup Fashions on the Field this year. We look forward to seeing what she will be wearing during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Stay tuned as we’ll be out and about during the Melbourne Cup Carnival to capture more wonderful images for you to enjoy. Maybe we’ll get a photo of you in your finery there : )

What a day …  … and make sure you like us on facebook to see even more pictures 🙂
